Our Editor’s Choice for the best electric fireplace is the PuraFlame 33 Western Electric Fireplace Insert. This gorgeous insert sits almost completely flush to your wall. It gives a very convincing appearance of a real fireplace, thanks to the brick back and sides. The logs burn bright like embers and the flames make the entire illusion come to life.

When it comes to the PuraFlame 33 Western Electric Fireplace Insert, choice is paramount. You get to decide on three flame effects. Furthermore, there are six crackling choices to choose from, allowing you complete control over the type of ambience you want to create.

While one of the biggest obstacles with electric fireplaces is the high electricity bill, you don’t have to worry as much as the PuraFlame 33 Western Electric Fireplace Insert uses premium LED technology. There is also an adjustable thermostat so you can find the sweet spot of warmth.

While this version measures 33 inches, there are other options to consider. You can find smaller fireplaces of the same model in 23, 26, and 30-inch sizes. It’s always nice to have options, especially as you may have to cut into the wall for this model and that might impact the size of the opening. However, because it has a flat bottom, it can also be placed directly on the floor.

The only real issue with the PuraFlame 33 Western Electric Fireplace Insert is with the remote. It’s not that powerful and might cause more grief than necessary. However, it’s a relatively small matter.

    What stands out?
  • Flat bottom allows it to sit on floor
  • Uses LED technology
  • Sits almost completely flush into the wall
What cons did we manage to find?

Duraflame DFI-5010-01

Features
  • Type: freestanding, infrared
  • BTUs: 5,200
  • Heating area: up to 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Dimensions: 13.1 x 24 x 23.4 inches
  • Warranty: 1-year limited

More features: 3D flame effect; overheat protection

If you have the room for it, a freestanding fireplace can add wonders to your house. The Duraflame DFI-5010 will make any space seem like it is actually a log cabin in the middle of the wilderness. Its four legs and glass front are the epitome of rustic charm.

While the Duraflame DFI-5010 isn’t particularly large it has an incredibly impressive heat range. With the power of 5,200 BTU units, this electric fireplace can heat rooms up to 1,000 square feet. It can indeed heat a log cabin or even an open concept living area.

The frame comes in multiple color options, including black, bronze, cinnamon, cream, French grey, and navy blue. No matter what the rest of the room looks like, there is an option that will fit right in.

The 3D flame technology makes it seem as if the flames are moving around and on the logs. Furthermore, there are five settings that allow you to change the color, speed, and brightness settings of the flames.

One really nice feature of this fireplace heater is the inclusion of infrared quartz. The result is that this product actually helps maintain the humidity in your home. For those that suffer from dry air, especially in the cold winter months, this feature is a huge bonus.

To control the heat, simply use the included thermostat with varying heat options. However, you might find yourself spending extra to get the temperature up as high as you would.

    What stands out?
  • Looks gorgeous
  • Comes in 6 color options
  • Multiple settings for flames
What cons did we manage to find?
  • Doesn’t get as hot as you may like

More features: built-in timer for auto-shutoff can be set for 30 minutes to 7.5 hours

For those looking for pure elegance in a wall mounted electric fireplace, consider the Touchstone Onyx Electric Fireplace. This beautiful piece has rich golden colors with a thick black border around it. This is a long and narrow fireplace and will quickly add a bit of luxury to your room.

With the purchase of the Touchstone Onyx Electric Fireplace, you get to choose if you want faux-logs or crystals as an accent on the bottom. Both are included so you can easily switch them up whenever you want.

Other features include having the fireplace on without heat, for extra ambiance, and the ability to set a timer for how long the heater is on.

While it might look large, the Touchstone Onyx Electric Fireplace only weighs 46 pounds. While one person could technically lift and install this fireplace on their own, you might want to enlist the help of a friend, just in case.

The blower on the Touchstone Onyx Electric Fireplace can get a bit noisy, especially if you’re sensitive to white noise. The heat output is good, though, so you may be able to warm your entire room without the fan on.

The only other issue with the Touchstone Onyx Electric Fireplace is that there aren’t a lot of options with regards to the flame. A lot of more premium electric fireplaces will allow to change the color of the flame or at least the vibrancy of it. With this product, however, there are no options.

What do we love it for?
  • Stunning design
  • Easy to install
  • Comes with both logs and crystals
    What were we disappointed with?
  • Can’t change the look of the flame

Most people don’t have a lot of extra space in their living room. And more importantly, nobody wants an overly cluttered room. To help bring two functions together, the Ameriwood Home Chicago Electric Fireplace TV Console is the perfect choice. This freestanding fireplace heater has a flat top that allows you to place your TV on it. You don’t have to worry about purchasing a separate TV stand and you also don’t have to go through the hassle of trying to wall mount one.

The Ameriwood Home Chicago Electric Fireplace TV Console has a gorgeous espresso wood color that is the perfect accent for most décor. You can also choose from black oak and rustic oak. It also has extra storage so you can store all your remotes and DVDs. Home organization never looked so stylish.

As for the fireplace specifications, this unit can heat up to 400 square feet which is pretty standard. Its LED lights give off a warm atmosphere although the fireplace design is rather small. Because the stand is trying to be a fireplace and a TV unit all in one, some compromise has to be taken.

The top of the Ameriwood Home Chicago Electric Fireplace TV Console is large enough to hold a 50-inch TV for a maximum of 70 pounds. This is ample space, given today’s modern TV designs. However, if you have an even larger TV, there is a model available for sets up to 65 inches in size.

Why did it make our list?
  • Comes in 3 color choices
  • Can hold a large 50-inch TV
  • Ample storage for TV paraphernalia
What is not ideal about it?
  • Fireplace feature is fairly small

Those living in a small space don’t have to compromise on comfort. The Valuxhome Electric Fireplace Stove Space Heater is the perfect option if you want a cozy accent but don’t have a lot of room for it. And as a very welcome bonus, it is incredibly affordable.

The Valuxhome Electric Fireplace Stove Space Heater styles itself as a premium space heater. It has an elegant wooden finish with a glass front that allows you a peak into a faux-fire. Its four legs give it an old-timey feel for much wanted ambiance.

Amazingly, despite its small size, it still produces 5,100 BTUs and can heat a space up to 400 square feet. There are three heat settings so no matter the season, you can keep your room as warm as you desire.

The flames are produced thanks to LED technology to save you on your electrical bill. There are also plenty of safety features, such as a thermal cut off feature to prevent overheating. And, if your fireplace happens to tip over, there is an automatic off feature.

There are further choices in the color scheme. You can get a traditional deep red look, a sleek black look, or a rustic white look. Whatever your current décor, there’s an option to help you match.

There were a few issues with the initial quality, but because the company has excellent customer service and the Valuxhome Electric Fireplace Stove Space Heater comes with a one-year warranty, any issues are quickly remedied.

Pleasant Hearth LH-24

Features
  • Type: electric log insert
  • BTUs: 4,600
  • Heating area: up to 400 sq. ft.
  • Dimensions: 23 x 13 x 9 inches
  • Warranty: 1-year limited

More features: operates with our without heater

The problem with some electric fireplaces is that they are quite large. If you live in a small apartment, your choice might be limited. However, there are some options, like the Pleasant Hearth LH-24. This is a log insert, meaning it doesn’t have a frame around it. Instead, it works better if you have an existing, older, fireplace and want to replace the wood and ashes with something more modern.

With 4,600 BTUs of output, this heater can warm up a room of up to 400 square feet in size. This is perfect for living rooms and apartments.

If you love the look of a real fire but don’t want the hassle of one, then the Pleasant Hearth LH-24 will definitely be your top pic. Its faux-wood is actually quite realistic looking. The embers glow read and the flames are pretty impressive.

The Pleasant Hearth LH-24 comes with a remote control for convenient use. You can adjust the temperature and flame settings. As well, you can have the flames on but the heat off, if you’re just looking for a bit of ambiance.

The heater on this fireplace is relatively quiet, especially at lower settings. It won’t overpower the room and you can watch TV while the fireplace is on.

While the Pleasant Hearth LH-24 does have some good settings, it lacks a bit on the heat portion. It does warm the room but it won’t get it toasty hot. If you’re looking to make your house cozier in the extreme winter, this might not be the best option.

    What stands out?
  • Includes a remote control
  • Fits well in existing fireplaces
  • Wood and embers are realistic
What cons did we manage to find?
  • Doesn’t get too hot

Some people, when purchasing an electric fireplace heater, want it to replicate a traditional fire. Others, however, want to embrace a more modern look. If you’re in the second camp then the XtremepowerUS Allure Linear Wall Mount Electric Fireplace was made for you. Instead of faux-logs, this fireplace uses crystal rocks instead. As for flames, you can choose between blue, red, and purple. You can even combine the colors and play around with how you want your fire to look. All this is done thanks to innovative LED technology.

The unit itself is extremely thin and is meant to fit into the recess of any wall. This is a long and thin unit so you will want to have adequate wall space as it measures 50 inches across.

The XtremepowerUS Allure Linear Wall Mount Electric Fireplace comes with a handy remote control so you can change the settings as you wish.

One you turn on the XtremepowerUS Allure Linear Wall Mount Electric Fireplace, it only takes five minutes to warm up. And then, it heats up to 400 square feet of space. This makes it perfect for most living rooms.

While this fireplace looks great after it is hanging on the wall, it can be a bit hard getting to that point. The installation is not as straightforward as one would hope, even with the accompanying instructions. Still, most people were able to figure it out eventually. Just plan for extra time and try not to get too frustrated.

    What are our favorite features?
  • Very modern and sleek look
  • Has 3 color choices and multiple combinations
  • Remote control is quite convenient

Most Versatile

Dimplex DFI2309

Features
  • Type: fireplace insert
  • BTUs: 4,700
  • Heating area: up to 400 sq. ft.
  • Dimensions: 25.5 x 21 x 13 inches
  • Warranty: 1-year warranty

More features: built-in fan-forced heater; flame only function

There are a lot of types of electric fireplaces but most of them have quite specific needs. Some are standalones while others need to be mounted to the wall. The Dimplex DFI2309, however, is quite versatile and can work in a variety of settings. It doesn’t have a border so it can be placed as an insert in the wall. It can also take the place of an old, traditional fireplace. If you’re already committed to a fireplace structure, check out this model as chances are, it will work for you.

The Dimplex DFI2309 has three settings. It can be turned at half heat, full heat, or flame only, just in case you want the ambiance of a fireplace but not the heat of it. Furthermore, the model comes with a remote control to make it easier than ever to change the settings.

Once it arrives, the Dimplex DFI2309 is nice and easy to install. It plugs into regular wall plug which makes it that more convenient.

While this is a nice product to choose for existing fireplaces, unfortunately the look of the electric flames does leave something be desired. For starters, it relies on older versions of electric fireplaces with not too authentic-looking wood. Furthermore, the fire illusion isn’t too convincing. Still, it is an affordable option and if you need something to replace the broken look of an empty fireplace, then this is definitely a product to consider.

    What are its best features?
  • Perfect for existing fireplaces
  • Includes a remote control
  • Easy to setup
    What could be improved?
  • Flames do not look very real

Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. In this case, the curves glass front of the Regal Flame Curved Electric Fireplace Insert really adds to the design. While most electric fireplace inserts are straight across, having a curved front makes this product a bit more unique. The results is as much about function as it is form.

The Regal Flame Curved Electric Fireplace Insert is a high-end model. It has multiple heat settings to that even in the coldest months of winter, you can stay cozy warm. The flames, too can be changed so you can have a bright or dim ambiance, depending on the mood.

One really nice feature is the timed mood. You can set the fireplace to run for anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 hours and not have to worry about remembering to turn it off. This is perfect if you’re prone to falling asleep on the couch or you don’t want to worry about your electricity bill.

The wood is realistic while also modern and the flames are quite vivid. The black border adds even more modern flare and will look good anywhere in your home.

The only real issue with the Regal Flame Curved Electric Fireplace Insert is that the curved glass can be a bit of a hazard for young children. While you should consider a grate with any model, if little kids are running around, the curved front could increase the chances of your child running into the hot surface.

    Why are we impressed?
  • Looks modern and elegant
  • Can change both heat and flame settings
  • Heater timer is a nice feature
What negatives must you be aware of?
  • Might not be suitable with little kids

If you don’t already have a fireplace in your home, why not just buy one? That’s the philosophy behind the ClassicFlame Eugene Wall Mantel. This freestanding electric fireplace looks as if you have an actual place to warm your feet by at night. The faux-brick and solid wood accents bring charm and a cozy atmosphere to and living room.

The ClassicFlame Eugene Wall Mantel is perfect for large rooms as it can heat up to 1,000 square feet. While some electric fireplaces are more for show than anything else, this product can take the chill out of any winter’s night thanks to its 5,200 units of BTUs.

The flame is fairly realistic thanks to its LED technology and there you can choose between three blue flame accents and three red flame accents. Whether you want modern sophistication or classic charm, there’s a fit for you. Furthermore, if you just want a focal piece, you can turn the flames on but keep the heat off. This is perfect for parties that naturally become too warm.

While this is a larger device, it’s actually fairly easy to assemble. All you need is a screwdriver and you are ready to go. Included with your purchase is a remote control which conveniently comes with batteries.

Overall, this is an excellent product. Perhaps the only downfall is that is rather large and it does come with a hefty price tag. You’ll want to make sure this is the unit for you and always measure twice before committing to the purchase.

  • Includes 3 blue and 3 red flame options
  • Easy to assemble

Things to Consider

The right electric fireplace can add both warmth and ambiance to your room. To help you find the right product for your needs, check out the features you’ll come across as well as the answers to all your important questions.

Features to consider while choosing an electric fireplace

10 Best Electric Fireplaces – Modern Technologies, Traditional Atmosphere!

There are many types of electric fireplaces to choose from and the amount of possible features can quickly become overwhelming. To help you narrow down your choices, these are the features to look for to find the best electric fireplace.

Type

There are three main types of electric fireplaces. Freestanding fireplaces mean they have their own legs and do not need to be attached to a wall. These are great if you are short on wall space or don’t want to go to much trouble to install a fireplace. On our list, the Duraflame DFI-5010, the Ameriwood Home Chicago Electric Fireplace TV Console, the Valuxhome Electric Fireplace Stove Space Heater, and the ClassicFlame Eugene Wall Mantel are all freestanding. However, within these models are vast differences. Some are small and some can support a large TV.

If you have an existing fireplace but don’t want to the bother of having to light wood and clean up ashes, an insert is a good idea. These fit inside the existing hole and give the appearance of a fire, without all the hassle. On our list, the Dimplex DFI2309, the Pleasant Hearth LH-24, the

PuraFlame 33 Western Electric Fireplace Insert, and the Regal Flame Curved Electric Fireplace Insert are all inserts.

Finally, if you want a real touch of modern decors, a wall mounted fireplace is the way to go. These are mounted directly on your wall and can be placed just about anywhere in a room. They are often sleekly designed and are meant to be both practical and decorative. On our list, the XtremepowerUS Allure Linear Wall Mount Electric Fireplace and the Touchstone Onyx Electric Fireplace are wall mounts.

BTU output

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and really it means how hot your fireplace can get. The higher the BTU number is, the hotter your fireplace will go. All fireplaces on our list have different settings, so don’t panic as your new purchase won’t have to be cranked to the max at all times. And really, except for extremely cold climates, most of the time you won’t want your fireplace to be at max heat.

On average, expect an electric fireplace to have a BTU output of around 5,000 units. On our list, products range from 4,600 units with the Pleasant Hearth LH-24 and the PuraFlame 33 Western Electric Fireplace Insert, up to 5,900 units with the Regal Flame Curved Electric Fireplace Insert. If you have a very drafty house or live up north, then definitely narrow your search to a fireplace with a higher BTU output. For all other circumstances, pick any fireplace, regardless of BTU output.

Heating area

The heating area of an electric fireplace refers to how much area around the fireplace can be heated. This is usually connected to the BTU output. Generally, 400 square feet is the normal, which means you should be able to heat a living room or a small apartment. Some electric fireplaces are more powerful. For instance, the Duraflame DFI-5010 and the ClassicFlame Eugene Wall Mantel can heat up to 1,000 square feet.

Just be aware that while a manufactured states the maximum heating area, other factors can impact reality. If you have a particularly drafty room or it’s quite cold out, you might not be able to heat all the space. Furthermore, heating may require keeping the heat to the maximum setting and using the fan which can be a bit noisy.

Modes and settings

There are two types of settings with electric fireplaces. The first is all about the heat. Most electric fireplaces will have at least three heat settings, of low, medium, and high. Others will have thermostats with more varying heat options. Most will also have the option of keeping the flame light on but turning off the heat, so your fireplace can be used for mood lighting. Finally, there may be a setting involving a fan or blower. This will work to blow heat further around the room although this setting can be a bit loud.

10 Best Electric Fireplaces – Modern Technologies, Traditional Atmosphere!

The other type of settings refers to the flames. Sometimes, you can change the flames, making them dimmer or brighter. Some models will even let you change the color of the flames. Not all electric fireplaces have flame settings and they are usually reserved for more modern designs and certainly for more expensive designs.

Dimensions

Electric fireplaces come in all shapes and sizes. You can find a compact one, like the Pleasant Hearth LH-24 which only measures 23 by 13 by 9 inches. On the larger end of the scale is an item like the Ameriwood Home Chicago Electric Fireplace TV Console. It measures 47.2 by 31.8 by 15.9 inches and is so large you can actually put a 50-inch TV on top of it.

To help you narrow down your choices, the best thing is to think about where you plan on placing your electric fireplace. Think carefully as you won’t want to move it later on. For freestanding or wall-mounted fireplaces, thing about the area around the fireplace and how close it might be to a TV, for noise purposes.

For fireplace inserts, check the dimensions of your existing fireplace. Some inserts have a frame around them while some are just the log setup.

Safety features

Fireplaces give off heat so you want to find one with important safety features. To start with, while the flame itself is an LED light and therefore not hot, electric fireplaces function as heaters which means they blow out hot air. If you have children, consider placing a gate in front of the fireplace, just in case.

For freestanding fireplaces, you’ll want to look for a tip over function. This means that if your unit tips over the sensor will trigger and it will automatically turn the heater off.

Some fireplaces will turn off automatically after certain times, and some can be programmed to turn off after a pre-determined length of time.

Ease of installation

Technology has come a long way with electric fireplaces and thankfully, most of them are easy to install. Freestanding fireplaces are the easiest. Simply decide where you want your model to, set it up if need be, and plug it in.

Inserts are also easy to install. Some can simply be placed inside the existing fireplace. Those with frames might need to be measured but it should be as simple as plugging in and placing it. Inserts usually need their own power outlet so if you don’t want cords running around, you will have to do a bit of DIY work to get everything set up.

Wall mounted electric fireplaces can be a bit tricky as you need to find the right place for it. Similar to mounting a TV, mounting a fireplace requires a bit of patience and a lot of accuracy for a level setup.

Even if fireplaces are lightweight, it’s always recommended to have a friend help you.

Warranty

For some reason, even the best rated electric fireplaces don’t have the best warranties. Not one product on our list has a warranty longer than one year. For more expensive units, you might want to consider purchasing an extra warranty, just in case.

Other features

10 Best Electric Fireplaces – Modern Technologies, Traditional Atmosphere!

Electric fireplaces run the gamut on extra features. The most basic is the inclusion of a remote control. Many units will have this and it’s a convenient way to change the settings on your fireplace.

More modern electric fireplaces will give you the option of the material used. For example, the Touchstone Onyx Electric Fireplace provides you with both faux-logs and crystals to use. You get to choose when setting up and can even change them out when you want.

As to be expected, basic electric fireplaces are far more budget friendly. If you’re paying over $400 for a new fireplace, you should be expecting a few exciting features.

FAQ

How to install a fireplace insert?

The best electric fireplace insert will be one that is easy to install. If your existing fireplace doesn’t already have a cover plate, you should put one on. This will prevent water and drafts from coming down the chimney. Then, close and seal the damper.

You can choose to run your power cord to the nearest outlet or create a new power box behind the electric fireplace. This can be done by yourself but you might want to ask an electrician, just in case.

Finally, place your electric fireplace insert inside. Some are small and only consists of the logs. Others have frames which will need to be installed, as well.

How long can it operate non-stop?

Some fireplaces will have timers that allow you to set how long it will operate for. This is usually between 7 and 8 hours. However, some won’t have this feature and will operate as a heater as long as it is turned on.

Do all the models feature crackling sound?

No, not all models will feature a crackling sound. This feature, which tries to replicate a real fire, is actually not very common.

Our verdict

There’s no reason to have a cold house anymore. Finding the best electric fireplace is the perfect way to keep cozy all winter long.

Our Editor’s Choice is the PuraFlame 33 Western Electric Fireplace Insert. Its brick background and almost flush-mounting makes it truly unique. If you want a freestanding fireplace instead, then check out the Duraflame DFI-5010. This electric fireplace will bring instant rustic charm anywhere you place it, thanks to its four legs and glass front. Finally, if you want to have a bit of a focal point in your room, then be sure to consider the Regal Flame Curved Electric Fireplace Insert. While most inserts are flat across, this product has a slight curve to it. The result is a modern, sophisticated, and eye-catching fireplace.

No matter what model you go with, one thing is for sure. This winter you can snuggle up and be as cozy as you want to be.
